In the spring of 2015, I did a story about efforts to restore the Schooner Western Union, flagship of the city of Key West and Florida. Twenty years earlier, in 1995, I talked to Capt. Richard Steadman as part of an oral history series with The Miami Herald. Steadman's father built the schooner and was her first skipper. Steadman was her second and last as a cable-tender.



On the centennial of the sinking of the USS Maine, in 1998, the Key West Art & Historical Society put together a fantastic exhibit about the ship — and gathered up many of its artifacts, which were distributed across the country when the ship was salvaged from the harbor.
